The ASA of PA Charity Challenge Championship tournament committee has just announced that the championship trophy that is awarded to the winner of the Slow Pitch Division's Rec Flight, will be named after Alfie Fioravanti, who passed away earlier this year.
It is most fitting that Alfie Fioravanti, whose name was synonymous with sportsmanship in Delaware County softball and who was revered as a player on the field, will have this trophy named after him.
For those who never knew Alfie, below is a small sampling of why he was considered, the best softball player to ever play in Delaware County.
All-Time Delaware County Starting Team
Pitcher -- Al Fioravanti (JC Perry/Martinique II/Sloppy Joe's/Willowbrook Pub)
1987 Daily Times CnC MVP, probably the best shortstop and hitter as well as the best pitcher. If there was an award for the nicest guy, he'd win that one also. He is a player that will forever transcend the word class.
All-Time Delaware County Most Valuable Player
MVP -- Al Fioravanti (JC Perry/Martinique II/Sloppy Joe's/Willowbrook Pub)
The yardstick of measuring a great player is talent and combining that with longevity makes him the best player ever. He was great in the 70's, 80's, 90's and in the 2000's, he's still considered a great hitter. He did all this while still maintaining an aura of class and good sportsmanship unmatched in this county.
Note: Selected MVP from a poll conducted on millenniumsoftball.com in 2000.
