Mickey Vernon Sports Museum: Legendary Delco Women's Sports Exhibit Athlete of the Week – "Theresa Dunbar"
The Vernon Museum's "Delco's Wide World of Women in Sports" exhibit remains open. This week, softball standout Theresa Dunbar is featured at www.mickeyvernonsportsmuseum.com.
Dunbar, a graduate of Archbishop Prendergast High and West Chester University, spent three years in West Germany coaching and playing basketball before returning to the United States to continue teaching and coaching.
As a softball player, she helped the Sharon Hill franchise win 11 Del Val Women's Fast Pitch League titles in 15 years. The team qualified for the national championship tournament twice, and Dunbar was named to the All-American team in 1984.
She was a member of a dozen teams that won the Daily Times Champs 'n' Charity Classic, and she was tournament most valuable player in 1994. She played for the Max Magee's team that won the ASA Class B Eastern Championship in Montgomery, Ala.
In 2000, she was named Women's Softball Player of the Millennium by the Daily Times, and in 2007 she earned a gold medal playing for the Delaware Blue Chicks at the Senior Softball Games in Louisville.
She has been inducted into the Amateur Softball Association of Pennsylvania Hall of Fame, the Delco Athletes Hall of Fame, and the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame/Delaware County Chapter.
