Sonny Pompilii of Chester and Bernadette Murphy of Secane left Sunday for Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where they will be among the umpires working the 2015 International Women's Fast Pitch Softball Tournament.
The two, who are members of the Pennsylvania Amateur Softball Association's District 6 staff, will be representing the United States, and the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and the International Softball Federation (ISF).
Pompilii is working the tournament for the ninth consecutive year while Murphy, who umpired at the tourney in 2012, will make her second appearance on the tournament staff.
Pompilii also has umpired in Italy and Australia, while Murphy has worked the National Games of the Republic of China in the 2006 World Cup of Softball.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Pompilii and Murphy will join many of the players and umpires in spending several days in Paris, France, where they will visit the Charlie Hebdo memorial, which is only three blocks from the hotel in which they will be staying.
Pompilii plans to place his ASA umpire flipping coin at the site, and Murphy will leave flowers at the memorial
Before they return home, the local umpires also will visit the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, which overlooks the beach on which so many gave their lives in the D-Day Invasion during World War II.
