John Phillips and Lou Adler were putting their own music industry ambitions first rather than thinking of The Mamas & The Papas. By the summer of 1967, after all the accomplishments of Monterey, John was having a more difficult time of composing new songs, and the group wouldn't have any new material released until May 1968's " The Papas and The Mamas " album , except for " Twelve-Thirty " as a single. If the group had done " San Francisco ", it would have been just the right song for them during that summer of '67, after " Creeque Alley ". By doing " San Francisco " secretly and quickly , they both hurt the group and deprived them of the major hit . Denny certainly would have sang the song so perfectly, and with Cass and Michelle too. A Mamas and Papas song was never better than when they group did it. Such a shame they didn't do it.
