Wednesday evening, I met up with Earnhardt during an appearance he had in Daytona Beach for the National Guard. I spoke with him for 13 minutes about how the team has run since Tony Eury Jr. was reassigned, his thoughts on this year's Daytona 500 and even Jeremy Mayfield. Earnhardt was in a chatty mood, so chatty we couldn't fit all of it into the paper.
He talked about getting his confidence back little by little these last few races. He talked about how bad things had gotten within his team before Rick Hendrick shook it up. He said this season is a big fail and that what he hoped was that the team would make progress toward next season. He said now he and Eury can go back to being friends, something that got difficult with their professional relationship.
