Posted by Barbara I may go for a 2nd opinion considering I've never had problems with my teeth in the past and all of a sudden I need this... Any advice would be super.

I was at the dentist today after I was told I had a cavity that may either be filled or require a root canal. As the dentist was working on the tooth she said "she believes she got everything and it looks good" and she is sure there is no infection. I'm confused because she then said "but you still need a root canal and crown lengthening surgery". If the tooth is not deseased, why would I need the root canal and the surgery. Why not just put a filling in the tooth? As far as I can tell, no part of the tooth is below the gum line?
