I can now answer this as my son returned from Savana yesterday after having a closure of the of true mitral valve leaflet.
Usually the Mitral valve has 2 leaflets that close together. When a valve is cleft there appears to be 3 leaflets or a gap in the middle of a true leaflet. Where there is this gap the valve can be floppy allowing regurgitation of the blood flow. My son Nathan who is 9 has had the leaflet with the gap sewn up during open heart surgery! After 6 days he came home, no more leak!!
