Here's what I've just written to GOSH, via their website. I addressed it to the 'campaigns' division.
Re. Current Advertising Campaign
I am writing to register my dismay, as the parent of a child with congenital heart disease, about the voiceover at the end of your current fundraising tv advert. To quote "it's not the heart - it CAN be fixed". I realise that this was clearly not your intention, but the insinuation that the viewer is left with, is that heart conditions CANNOT be fixed. A distressing inference, which when coming from a revered body, such as GOSH, would carry a real 'blow'. For parents-to-be, this could be an especially alarming message and may cause them toward a particular course of action..... and I am also concerned that my youngest Son's older siblings may see this advert and take the wrong message about their little brother's situation. I ask (from my own heart) that you consider changing the voiceover to remove the front part of that sentence, and omit reference to 'heart'. I don't think the advert would suffer as a result. Please will you contact me so that I know you have heard my concerns. Yours faithfully, Philippa Duffy, Mother to Leo (Tetralogy of Fallot, AVSD, Pulmonary Stenosis).
