In the opening bout, rookie sensation Maverick made quick work of the Carolina Destroyer in only 23 seconds, to record one of the quickest wins in CWA history! The evening started off with a bang and continued as veteran Ethan Cage defeated rookie Chase Dakota in a hard fought contest. The experience of Cage overmatched the brash youngster and the CWA veteran was able to score the win to stay in title contention. Powerful Patrick Wright defeated Josh Oglesby in a battle of newcomers to the Statesville scene.
Two top heavyweight contenders squared off as Jason Jones faced Marcellus King. This was a high quality heavyweight bout that saw King surprise the quicker Jones with a powerful side slam for the three count.
Quick was the word of the night in the Ultra J Championship three-way as Kamakazi Kid defended the belt against former champions Caleb Konley and Stoney Hooker. In only a few months of existance, the Ultra J belt has been a hot potato frequently changing hands between these three competitors and it was thought that with all of them in the same match, we would finally discover who was the best man in the field. However, that was not to be as despite a showcase of incredible athletic maneuavers that had Grace Park on their feet, it was actually the injured Derek Ryze who returned to the scene and influenced the final decision. The bitter Ryze attacked Hooker on the outside of the ring just as Hooker seem poised to regain the belt and in the commotion, Konley was able to scoop Kamakazi into a roll-up and place his feet on the ropes for a controversial pinfall. "The Obsession" walked out of Statesville the new Ultra J Champion but the issues were not settled and there are just as many hard feelings as ever between the young stars of the Ultra J division.
Up next was the chaotic climax to the Heavyweight Championship feud between Jesse Ortega w/ mentor Gemini Kid and Charlie Dreamer. Dreamer had proven himself to be among the most credible and honorable champions in CWA history until Ortega, using every illegal tactic he could including a fire extinguisher stole the belt from Dreamer several months ago. The popular Dreamer remained hot on Ortega's heels leading to this championship showdown that finally saw the odds evened up when CWA fan favorite Deon Davis returned to take out Gemini Kid. When Gemini out of the picture, the technically sound Dreamer zeroed in on Ortega's leg and eventually clamped on a figure four leglock for the submission to become the first ever 2-time CWA Heavyweight Champion. Statesville roared their approval as official Charles Richardson awarded the belt to Charlie Dreamer, placing his name forever in the CWA record books.
That brought us to the main event. And with so much hype from previous Rise of a Champion main events like Tracy Smothers vs. Bobby Houston and the Jake Manning vs. Bobby Houston cage match, all four competitors knew they were in for the fight of their lives when the steel cage went up and Team Macktion and the Elite Icons stepped in. What followed was a brutal, bloody, violent spectacle that has to be seen to be believed. Special guest referee Dave Hebner, who has officiated WrestleMania main events in his career, said it was all he could do to keep up with the four amazing wrestlers putting their bodies on the line inside the cage. At one point even Hebner himself found himself busted open due to the steel cage as the Icons were clearly willing to do anything to not only retain the belts but remain a team, as the rules for this bout stipulated that the losers would be gone from CWA. Icons manager Ty Dillinger weaseled his way into the cage but found himself on the receiving end of the Mack brothers Death From Above which sent Statesville into a frenzy as they saw Dillinger tossed hard to the floor, leaving only the Macks vs. the Icons. Both teams were battered and bloody but in the end it was Kirby & TJ Mack who came out on top, regaining the Carolinas Tag-Team Championships and forcing Ty Dillinger out of the CWA. After three years on ruling an empire, Ty Dillinger is now gone from the CWA after the Icons loss to Team Macktion. Many questions remain now, who will step up and seize power in CWA? Will Silvia & Manning be able to rebound from the loss? And what is the condition of all four men after such a brutal bout? All four showed the fatigue and scars of a violent war and what kind of shape any of them will be in for future commitments and title defenses remains to be seen.
We put our best foot forward on our anniversary card and we thank you sincerely for being a part of all the excitement CWA has brought in the last year. Stay tuned because 2008 is just getting started and there are many, many more surprises and action packed nights ahead!
