After a little more searching for my own sources, I stumbled upon the quote in question once again, and I can say with confidence that it is originally from an article in Popular Music, published May 1999, by Claude Chastagner.
The URL I posted above is a website in French that hosts the article, with a brief citation of where it originated.
Also, it occurred to me that this article might have appeared is Szatmary's book, and it was an honest mistake in citation, followed by a few typographical errors. In that case, I retract my accusation of plagiarism but maintain that this site should probably not be used for an academic source, regardless.
