I had good luck a few years back with DiMarzio J pickups. The ones I had came with adjustable pole pieces and were real quiet. I used a volume, blend, tone, wiring configuration, totally passive. I miss that bass. Sold it for enough to buy a brand new Tacoma 5 string.
