It totally depends on what you want. I currently gig two basses. One of them Uses D'dario custom light ProSteels. They are a textured round wound steel string for a bright, very punchy, gruff sound. I use that bass for allmost all of the rock, and for latin and funk jazz. My other bass uses D'dario chromes, for a smooth, mellow tone. I use this bass for ballads and most jazz (more portable than a standup). I all depends on what you are going to do with it. I would recomend d'dario string to anyone though. It would probably be best to start with a mid to light gauge round wound nickle from a good brand, and then with input from your dealer adjust towards your sound from there.
