Defretting

I just defretted my bass yesterday. Every fret came out nicely, and then I gently sanded the fingerboard smooth. My question is, do I need to coat the fingerboard (rosewood) with something, or is it fine to play on as is? Also I heard of someone using wood filler to fill the fret slots, is that ok? thanks.
