Dull Neck Sound

Hey, I've been doing up a old Fender Jazz for the last few months, I de-fretted it no problem, but the neck now seems to sound really dead, I put Flatwounds on it and I like the sound of them but the bass dosn't have that fretless sound. Is there anything I can do to create this sound? I heard some bassists laquer their necks in this situation, could this help and if so what should I use? Thanks
