Maple fretless fingerboards

I want to defret my maple fretboard bass.
Is it wise/ would you (don't) do it and why?
Does the laquer on the fretboard crackle/damage badly, when heating and pulling out the frets?
If not could I just put wood putty in the open bits and voila?
Just tell my everthing you wanna share about it if you ever made a Maple fingerboard fretless please.
