It's the string to neck contact, that makes that raspy sound. How much of it that comes out, depends on the neck fingerboard material, and strings. Pickups play a role in the sound also. A good fretless should resonate brightly with or without an amp, and it should also be able to give that noticable (mwahh) sound plugged straight into the amp with no special eq settings, or sound effects. Welcome to the elite players world.
