lacquered fingerboard for a Carvin 6

I saw this one fretless bass at a music store that had a lacquered fingerboard. It was really interesting. I'm thinking about asking the Carvin guys to do that to my custom fretless when I get it, but I don't really know anything about it. What does lacquering a a fretless fingerboard do? Will it give the fingerboard more durability so I can use a softer wood for it? Does it warm up the tone?
