The object is to protect the fingerboard from wear and tear caused by friction against roundwound strings.
It also adds a touch of brightness to the sound.
See Pedullas' website for example.
M.V.Pedulla uses a polyester finish on the fingerboard that is super-hard.
My 1982 Buzz 4-string is still rockin'!
: I saw this one fretless bass at a music store
: that had a lacquered fingerboard. It was
: really interesting. I'm thinking about
: asking the Carvin guys to do that to my
: custom fretless when I get it, but I don't
: really know anything about it. What does
: lacquering a a fretless fingerboard do? Will
: it give the fingerboard more durability so I
: can use a softer wood for it? Does it warm
: up the tone?
