Dear Stringfellow,
Thanks for your recommendations. Any thoughts regarding how to apply coatings to get a smooth finish? Also, about how often do you need to recoat due to chipping? Last question-- how have you found the tone to change after coating?
: I would coat the neck with a hard epoxy.
: Minwax Helsman Spar works good. I have also
: found a new product via Home Depot, that is
: called Famowood glaze coat
: (www.famowood.com). I also slap, and pop
: heavily on fretless and have never torn up a
: neck, because of these coatings. Hope this
: helps.

: Hi,
: I recently started playing bass, and have
: just gotten interested in slap technique.
: My bass is a carvin LB75F with ebony
: fingerboard, uncoated. The problem is that
: I am starting to shred the fingerboard a bit
: with the pop slap stuff. Someone
: recommended to me that I have the
: fingerboard coated with epoxy or something
: similar, but I was wondering if anyone had
: an alternative suggestion. I thought maybe
: a brass block, cut flush with fingerboard
: and mounted between the bottom of the
: fingerboard and the upper pickup might
: absorb some of the abuse? I'd appreciate
: any advice.
