Then I start thinking about the pawn shop around here that buys these inexpensive imports and the "budget basses" the music store I work for sells. The necks on these things are like wet noodles. The pickups are noisy. The sound is mediocre on the fretted instruments and absolutly horrible on the fretless ones. I can imagine the underpaid labor that assembles these things working in bad conditions. I dont think the wood has been dead for more than a couple weeks when they build these things. I would save your money and buy something at the 500 USD price range used. You'll be able to see if the neck wood has stabilized over a period of time instead of hoping the cheap bass doesn't warp during the next seasonal change. Fretless basses need good wood and pickups to sound really good. Technique helps alot too.
