I would go for the standard J bass. You can find them on ebay for $300-400 dollars at times (used). I have personally owned one, and paid about $480.00 for it new at Guitar Center. There is really no major difference in the models, exept for active pickups on the deluxe verses passives on the mexi. I changed the pickups, bridge, made it a string through the body, and coated the neck, for about $200.00 dollars. The bass plays fine without these mods, but I would highly recomend them. I would also look for an MIJ J-bass (made in japan)on ebay, they are suppost to be some of the best made. I hope this helps.
