Defretting

I have a G&L L2500 5 string bass.Its a good bass but it doesn t stack up to my Fender American Jazz deluxe as a "fretted bass".I am seriously considering "defretting " the G&L.
I ve had fender jazz fretless basses and loved
playing them.I m concerned however that the G&L
might not have been meant to be a "fretless" as I ve not seen one any where before.Does anyone have a good reason why I should not give it a try?
