Hello. Jaco Pastorius is usually credited with the invention of the electric fretless, however it doesn't take too keen an eye to to have spotted that Jack Bruce from Cream was playing one at least five years before Jaco's debut album. One of the folk here at fretlessbass.com suggested that the original Fender 'Precision' is so called because Fender added frets to what was initially a fretless electric, hence 'precision' playing. They couldn't however give any indication of when this may have been first done.
