That dark grey paint in the cavity is a sheilding paint. You can further sheild the cavity buy putting copper sheilding tape under the cover plate if it doesn't already have any. The sheilding tape is pretty cheap, and can be found on ebay, or Warmoth. The cover plate shouldn't be off that much, maybe the previous owner tried to modify it. I hope this helps.
: : Hi,
: I recently checked out a used mid-80s
: Pedulla MVP that I'm thinking about buying.
: I was thinking about writing the company
: with some questions, but I thought I'd see
: what you guys have to say first. You've all
: been very helpful in the past.
:
: The MVP is fretted of course, but I'm really
: a fretless player and if I buy this bass
: then it will eventually end up back at
: Pedulla for a defret job. So I figure it's
: valid to ask about it here.
:
: The neck has a fair amount of forward bow
: and the action is pretty high, but I'm sure
: that these can be dealt with by me or a
: tech. My main concern is the control
: cavity.
:
: First, the cavity doesn't appear to be
: shielded. There is dark grey paint beneath
: the finish. Is the shielding beneath the
: paint or does the paint itself contain some
: sort of metal? Am I right to assume it's a
: moderately pricey job to install shielding
: as all the wirework has to be undone then
: redone? There was a distinct hum (not
: distortion) that seemed to go away when I
: put in a fresh battery, but I'm still
: suspicious.
:
: Second, the cover plate (which is original
: since the grain matches) doesn't fit very
: well. It seems a little too big, and
: there's an eighth-inch gap along the bottom
: when it's screwed down. I realize that wood
: will change over time and I don't care much
: about the cosmetics. But does this indicate
: that there's some instability in the wood
: somewhere? It's hard for me to believe
: there's that much moisture getting through
: all that thick Pedulla polyester. This sort
: of thing doesn't happen with well-made
: furniture, so why is it happenening with a
: well-made bass?
:
: Well, this bass would be a big move up and
: it would be great to hear from you guys on
: my concerns or anything else you think I
: should be looking out for in an older
: Pedulla.
:
: Thanks very much.
