Before you consider spending money on a new operating system, I'd recommend backing the whole thing up and reinstalling your current one. You don't need to put a more demanding OS onto a computer with problems.
For a home user, i agree with Brian. Little difference between the versions.
Give the thing a good blowing out inside with some canned compressed air or an air compressor. Get every nook and cranny in there. Heatsinks can easily clog with dust and stuff.
If you have friend (nearby) who is familiar with computer hardware, you may consider getting a new heatsink for it. If not, take it to a local shop (not best buy) and tell them its overheating. They can probably pop it open, give it a look, and order a new heatsink for it. You should be able to keep your computer while they wait on it to arrive.
