I would start by popping the cooling unit off, remove the old thermal paste and apply new. I think I've got some around here somewhere.
Then of course bust out the compressed air and blow the shit out of the whole case.
As for Windows 7, it's a sweet operating system. Get it if you want (if you can get the student price). But like Hoppe said, it's not necessary to fix the issue you're having. Another feature of pro over home is that you can remote into it from another pc. I wish I would have known that before I ordered home cause that's a nerd feature I'd love to have. Not really essential though.
