first off, thanks for all your replies. i very much appreciate them.
second, the reason i think it's something in the system and not a fan or something is because it only shuts down when running an anti-virus program (AVG, spybot, etc). it has never done this before. and again, it has been running slower since i moved here and/or installed the wireless router (which i've never had with this comp). i just don't see how the unit (which was built with all sorts of fans and calls itself a "cooling tower") could just start overheating. i know i don't know much about comps, but that doesn't make full sense to me. i looked inside and there's not much dust at all though i will try to blow it out tonight and perhaps we can apply new thermal paste as you (zach) suggested to see if that remedies the issues.
but the fact is that despite putting numerous upgrades in there, it's been running a bit slower and slower as the weeks go on. again, doesn't make sense to me. doesn't seem like that it's being "overworked". but i still have some of the same problems i always had: slow loading time for programs (firefox, photoshop, etc), delayed appearance of icons on desktop. i just think i caught something and don't know how to clear it out. and since i can't run any of my virus stuff, well, that only makes it harder to figure.
as for win7, i can get that student discount so i figure that even if i never install it, i might as well take advantage of the price reduction. seems professional's the way to go by yall's call. i've read some things about it and, yeah, there's probably nothing wrong with my XP, but 1) i don't know where the software is to reinstall it (2) perhaps it's time for a change. i always seem to be behind in the computer department and, for the work i do now for school, teaching (when i go back), and band/music, i'd like to get this computer up to speed.
in closing, i motion that "bazinga" be instituted as a new official "tribal word" to be used at various times ("oh man, frog beat the bazinga out of that prostitute!").
