They are a magnificent improvement. They are longer and more exhausting for the staffs, accompanists and volunteers this year, but that should be better next year. Not having done it this way before nobody knew how much time the new format would take, so they scheduled 12 - 13 per hour. It turns out they could schedule 16 per hour comfortably. That would cut down a couple of hours a day, which would be good.
The people who auditioned LOVED it. A lot less stress, a lot more individual attention from the volunteers, a total time commitment (if you were doing movement rather than dance) of an hour and a half. And the audition itself in front of fewer people meant nobody had to yell at the crowds every 10 minutes to "be quiet as we can't hear the person auditioning." It was really easy to hear the person this year.
They'll tweak it next year, no doubt, to make it nicer for the staffs (shorter), but I really can't think of much else that needs to change.
