Hi KB! It's Lauren Whalen--happy to help you!
What I like to do:
1) Get to the theatre as early as I can before the show. If I'm hanging out in the environment, socializing with everyone while getting ready, it's a more comfortable and relaxed transition to performing (as opposed to rushing there, slapping on costume and makeup, and running around).
2) Even if it's not a musical, I like to do some kind of stretching exercises (basic dance warm-up stuff) beforehand. Gets the blood flowin'.
3) Finally, I only think as far as the first five minutes of a performance. Generally, I'm only nervous for the first five minutes. I tell myself if I can get through that, I will no doubt be fine for the rest of the show.
Good luck on your article!
