As I crawled up out of my basement to head toward Springfield Friday night I listened to Gus and his weather-wise cohort on Channel 20 discuss the wisdom of leaving your doors open or shut when a tornado approaches. Bottom line: it doesn't matter.
But no open or closed doors could have stemmed the explosion of talent we saw as Dessa Rose opened on the top floor of the Hoogland. When you have that much theatrical pressure onstage, something's gotta give. It did. Morgan Williams and Cathy Doyle along with a cast of supporting all-stars took the barometer for ride to be remembered. Hang on, Toto! That's one "deep" cast! When the Dessa Rose ensemble sang the storms raging outside were blown back across the river.
Congrats to Laurie O'Brien for her astute direction, a flawless orchestra (tough score!), and tasteful tech crew for bringing us something new and exciting and...well...explosive!
