Same thing happened to me on opening night...three girls..all of whom had purposely brought large purses so they could hide the phones inside...and they sent texts all through the show...probably to each other... idiots! Extremely distracting! If I hadn't snuck and was sitting in the wrong seat, I'd have changed. (okay..actually they double-sold my seat)
In Paris they use devices which will zap the signals of all phones and these gizmos from God are used in theatres...but in the U.S. such things still aren't allowed by the FCC..at least they weren't a year ago. Let freedom die! What about MY freedom to enjoy the show without the diode glare?
Seriously...we need real and threatening and deadly warnings before a show, accompanied by an invitation to leave the theatre if their addiction is too great.
Two years ago I had a joy: I was appearing in Man of La Mancha and directing the show. I hurried backstage to change my Sancho pants, found a muleteer checking his phone between scenes...I grabbed it and threw it against the wall. The sound was glorious, the shards were a blessing, the muleteer was aghast...and didn't do it again.
Whew...man, I feel better. Now..somebody hand me a phone..quick.
