The "it interferes" argument has actually been wrong for years. The FCC sold the frequencies to cell phone companies and prohibited microphones that used those frequencies. As of June 1 another set of frequencies is being sold and older microphones which use those frequencies are illegal. They stopped selling those microphones several years ago in anticipation of that sale. I believe Muni this winter retired a few old mics for that reason. I've checked GHS' and SHS' microphones and it looks like they are new enough not to be in the prohibited range.
Nope the only reason to turn them off is their being TOTALLY inappropriate and rude in a theater. That's a darn good reason. The only modern technology I'd like to see used in the audience is tasers aimed at cell phone users.
