Grocho Marx once said that things had come to such a pass that the only thing he felt comfortable making jokes about was the man-eating shark. Of course, that was before PETA and the more militant animal rights groups. Mel Brooks said, on national television after The Producers opened on Broadway, "This play is an equal-opportunity offender." In a way, Brooks is satirizing our bent toward political correctness. While I am not in favor of making fun of any minority, I find it equally sad that we no longer seem to be able to laugh at ourselves.
