Simple......
The African American community has NEVER condoned the Stepin Fethchit stereotype. The Asian American community has never condoned the Mickey Rooney stereotype. These stereotypes might have been tolerated, but not much more, because they have always been mean spirited and condescending.
The gay community, on the other hand, invented the stereotype that was seen onstage in The Producers. They've condoned and embraced the "Camp" stereotype for so long that it's not even a stereotype anymore.
From Mart Crowley to Terrance McNally, from Paul Lynde, Rip Taylor and Charles Nelson Reilly to The Boys in the Hall and "Just Jack," these types of characters have been represented in the mainstream media by gay and straight artists alike. Why should a straight person be offended when the majority of the gay community is not?
I think Mr. Mackey is just longing for his days as a political reporter and looking to "stir the pot" a bit. I think that most people would agree that there is no story here, and it's time to move on.
