Garnett Bohemians 4 (3) - (2) IBIS
On a overcast Saturday afternoon the Bohs select XI took on the London IBIS team in the annual Newcastle University friendly. Bohs played in the usual green and black as the game got under way minus a Mr Catchpole who had sent his superior referee as fitting replacement.
The game started brightly I think and IBIS took the lead with a finely crafted goal which saw Shaw rounded neatly despite claims of offside from the home defence. IBIS doubled the lead thanks to another breakaway dubious offside decision (Potter again talking on the half way line).
At this stage Holme make a tactical switch bringing on the slightly lighter 15 stone Robins for the walrus of a man Ford up front. This proved to be the turning point as Drake surged forward on the left he was bundled to the ground. From the freekick, Riley swung in a peach of a delivery to find the head of Robins who found the corner of the net from 5 yards out.
Moments Later and Garnett were level, a lofted freekick from Laws towards Sherwood put the IBIS defender under pressure and he lited a header over the advancing keeper for the equaliser.
Bohs again broke away with Sherwood receiving the ball to feet before feeding Robins who in turn, laid the ball off to the advancing Lynch who delivered the prefect cross to the far post for Parkinson to put Bohs in the lead for the first time that afternoon.
Just before half time IBIS were denied a clear penalty after Buckley brought down their forward in the box which was waved away by the ref as he was never in control of the ball.
The second half started in much the same vain as the first with both teams setting out to attack, IBIS were more dominate for the majority of this half and almost equalised when their big number 5 struck the underside of the cross bar, luckily the ball bounced on the right side of the line and away from danger (I was linesman and it definately didnt cross the line!).
IBIS continued to attack and had numerous chances to equalise but good defending and saves from Shaw prevented this from happening. A draw would have been a fair result however a maurding run from the back by Laws resulted in a cut back to Sherwood who couldn’t miss from just inside the area.
The game was ended slightly early by the ref due to one of the opposing defenders deciding the best form of defence was to hoof every single ball over the fences and away from danger, and thus leaving us ball less.
Team: Shaw, Parkinson (1), Riley, Laws, Buckley, Lynch, Hall, Bowe, Sherwood (1), Ford, Drake. Subs Robins (1), Holme
