Definition of Lymphedema

This chronic condition can develop when the channels and ducts that transport lymph are missing, impaired, or damaged as with breast cancer surgery. Left untreated, the accumulation of lymph fluids can reduce oxygen availability in the circulatory system, interfere with wound healing and cause symptoms of decreased circulation with a breeding ground for bacterial infection. Secondary lymphedema can occur following breast cancer surgery after the removal of one or more lymph nodes. Lymphedema can develop immediately after surgery or months to years following cancer treatment and can also develop following scarring from infection or radiation therapy, or it may result from traumatic injury to a part of the lymphatic system. Treatment: Massage, bandaging, garment compression, exercises and skin care.
