I had lymphedema following mastectomy and sought treatment right away. Mild case but it did involve the arm, hand and also some in the chest and back area. Excellent results and after my sessions with P.T. I continued the massage for several months. Last year I had a spontaneous rupture of the retinaculum (tissue that holds the tendons on the back of the hand in place) and had to have a reconstruction and repair. My hand Surgeon said there would likely be no problem regarding the return of lymphedema as there was no real proof that surgery would be a cause. I was bandaged with cast and ace from mid forearm to finger tips for 10 days, Evidently he was right as I had no lymphedema problem. Actually I found it rather amusing that you are cautioned not to have B/P taken in that arm and I had a monster tourniquet on for 45 min. at a much higher compression than a B/P cuff.
Sarah L .... don't be discouraged as it may take months to see the kind of improvement we'd like to see in a week or two. Lymphedema requires Patience PLUS !! Hang in there ....
