It's a really simple circuit and test. Clip a test light to the purple wire on the starter solenoid. Put the other end of the test light to a good ground. The light should not be lit until the key / ignition switch is activated or in the crank position. If you crank and get no light you have no voltage to energize the solenoid. Possible cause, reach under the dash and check for voltage in and out of the switch, you may have to remove the 40 + year old switch to gain access. If power is good through the switch , check the wiring harness for continuity between the switch and solenoid. Pull the connector apart at the firewall and look for poor dirty and burnt connections. This is a very over looked problem area that will cause intemittent starting problems. Judging by your description and the fact that you can use a remote button. I would check the switch...internal contacts tend to wear after years and those firewall connections have been exposed to the elements for many years also. Hope this helps.
