It's worth checking where the wiring harness plugs into the firewall (just opposite the fuse box inside).
I had a wire burn out and it killed any ability to start the car, yet everything else worked. My mechanic found that problem and permanently soldered the wire together since the plug in part was melted. He said this happens occasionally on old wiring.
