Just joined up here after reading this forum for a while. This forum is filled with all kinds of great information and people.
While I am a big fan of the 427 versions, one of my rides is a 68 Caprice 396 Sport Sedan. I picked it up from a friend after it sat for over 16 years and it is a great looking car. It is fully loaded and has some of the more rare options on it, like Vigilite, hide-away headlights, the big 4 piston calipers up front and vacuum operated power door locks. The car has about 25 options from what I can gather. Originally built in Doraville and sold at Gene Crump Chevy in Tuscumbia AL. It’s a 68,000 mile survivor that I recently put floors in along with a completely restored interior. The car is a real pleasure to drive and I’ve really enjoyed digging up all the info I can on it.
One of the more odd features it has is the weird Buick type door lock switches. They are square with brushed faces and don’t match the window switches. I removed the driver’s side door panel to have it refinished and found they cut the doors with a torch at the factory to clear these switches. It is very strange. I’ve seen other cars with these switches. I did some research and found that GM was on strike through JAN/FEB of 1968, and this car was built in MAR 68. That makes me wonder if this is why they used other GM version switches. (did they run out of the matching switches to fill special orders because of the strike?) I was wondering if anyone here had any more information about these. I can post photos of the switches and holes cut in the doors. I looked up this option in the assembly manual and there are no drawings for A93 power door locks. At least not in my book.
Thanks,
-Scott
