Thanks for the comments guys- I didn't know the SS427 came that way. I don't know if someone ordered this grill for my car or if the previous owner had done this but the black was worn and faded. Even the horizontal flat parts were done this way. Is that how the 427 grill is?
Before I decided to repaint it or remove the black I played around in Photoshop to see how the grill would look with different configurations. The latter of the 2 seemed too radical but might work on a more customized Impala/Caprice.
I used a Rustoleum flat in a can and repainted the vertical bars and headlight doors with a brush. Very tedious but the results look great. It gives the car kind of a sinister look with hide-aways. I think any Impala would look good with the grill this way (unless your going for concours shows).
I had also tried the red valance in Photoshop but didn't really like the look. Here's the shot in case anyone else is wondering how this would look:
