I was there (in Scottsdale) 3-4 years ago and it was definitely worth the trip. For nothing more, Arizona weather in January beats the heck out of anything happening on the east coast........
BJ does a great job with the marketing and promotion so there is a lot of fluff surrounding the event. Bottom line though - it's a car auction and a lot of what you see may not be all that different than what you see at the nicer car shows in your own back yard. The difference is that they do attract the rare and high dollar cars that make for good entertainment when the high rollers get going.
What hit me the most was the level of detail (or lack thereof) that the cars had. Those that had attention to detail did very well but I was somewhat surprised to see that the cars with little or no attention to detail brought much more than I thought they would. Detail is something you cannot see from pictures or while watching on TV.
