You didn't mention high temperatures but I suspect that's an issue in which case this wouldn't work. In a somewhat similar application we used rubber hood hold-downs meant for Toro or Wheel Horse garden tractors. They flex & stretch as needed and don't require perfect alignment. They provide enough tension to minimize vibrations, are easily opened & closed, etc. These are a smaller version of the straps you see holding the hoods of some big trucks and buses, usually the tilt-cabs.
