The staking mall sitting next to the soda/acid extinguisher and in front of the carpet beater was used by a fairly rich show to drive tent stakes. Damn, I feel old cause I have first hand experience with all of them.
A staking crew of 4 men with 4 malls drove stakes, generally wood up until the 50s when halfshafts from car rearends came to be the chosen stake. I say rich show because that mall has a factory made handle, which wasn't all that common. Most malls were made by the show's blacksmith from what could be scrounged along the road as the show traveled. The preferred wood for heads was aptiog picked up when the show wintered in the south, hard and stringy.
When a new head was made the bands were heated and driven into place with rivets driven into predrilled holes to retain the band. The head generally went 15 to 18 pounds.
The handle next to the buck appears to be from an upholsterer's tack hammer.
