The name is most likely ground off because they are seconds from the SK factory. By seconds I mean tools that didn't meet the quality control standards. I'm just speculating here but I would assume thats where they came from originally. Not all bad if its just a crappy finish or something cosmetic but what about other defects, like incorrect sizing or the walls of a could be too thin.I really haven't been that impressed with my SK tools though. All my SK tools were purchased in 2006, excluding the many replacements I've had to get.
My grandpa started in the automotive business after he came home from WWII. He retired with over 40 years experience and claimed dollar for dollar SK tools were the best. My uncle has lots of older SK tools that are of good quality, on par with MAC. I know lots of techs that started in the 70's who still have most of their original SK sets. In my experience newer SK tools don't live up to previous quality standards and also should not be called a proffessional tool anymore. The only exception I can think of is their standard 3/8 ratchets, those things are pretty solid but if it does break the repair kits are cheap and easy to find at most auto parts stores. They are also a snap to rebuild. The downside is they have a low number of gear teeth(36 I think...) and that makes for a 10 degree swing, not good for tight spots.
In case you are wondering I am 21 and started doing tune-ups and oil changes at my uncles repair shop at 14 and I have continued to work there. I also have a bachelors degree in automotive service. Hope I don't sound too arrogant I'm just giving a little background. I use my tools daily and anyone who works in this field knows superior quality tools are a must.
