Hello Todd, Franz knows a lot more about the butt sets than me but here is my take. I worked closely with telco repairmen for years as we had dedicated radio lines and our own PBX's. I thought the early bright colored butt sets were bright colored to keep from walking off and leaving your butt set connected to test terminals. I know that later the different manufacturers had different color sets.
Franz's comment about the new exchanges may not be able to handle pulse dial brings up my pet peeve. The telephone company for years has charged $1 extra for touch tone and I contend that it actually costs them more to support my old dial phones.
