The newer battery technologies may provide longer run times but are far more sensitive to heat than the Ni-Cad's we first new when we bought our first cordless tools and heat translates into shorter life.
If you have only one battery, a second one will help cut your downtime. If you have two, a third battery will provide additional assurance that you'll be able to complete your work with the minimum of hassle.
It sounds like you might have a bad battery pack or charger problems and that should be covered under the warranty if time hasn't run out.
