O-rings are used to make the watertight seal and are easily damaged if proper deburring is not done. Witness marks help to ensure proper depth of pipe insertion. If problems/leaks arise, it'll likely be cause by one or the other.
The small plastic size specific c-shaped tool the offer for infrequent users are more trouble that they are worth. The steel tong-like tool is your best bet if the expense isn't a big issue.
A 1/2" copper sweat coupling is approx. 75 cents around here. A 1/2" Sharkbite coupling runs around $6.50 at the same location. I bought into 2 motels here 5 years ago and am running maintenance for both. The wet chase is 24" wide on one with the access hatch being a opening between two studs below the vanity. Getting in, around, and back out make this type of fitting attractive.
PE@ is better handled with the proper tools, which are much less expensive and easier to work with although tool expense can hold some folks back.
