DOC,
The simple answer and most effective cure is for people to get off their butts' and take charge of their own situations. If their private insurance company is not giving a return on the investment, go find one that is. The common sign seen in many state parks is "Don't feed the bears!" - the same applies throughout your daily life - DON'T FEED THE BEARS!!!!!!!!!
I recently stopped at Johnstone Supply in Ocala FL to purchase materials for some products I'm trying to bring to market. Experience has taught me to ask price before committing to buy anything because no matter who the supplier is, they're going to try raping you for every penny they can get. So I gave the counter guy a short-list of a few items I knew the current pricing on and asked for his price. Without hesitation or asking anything about me or my businesses, he went off on a rant about how I needed a state HVAC license, bla bla bla.... All I said was, "after twenty-seven years in business, I won't be insulted by a counter monkey" as I walked out.
DON'T FEED THE BEARS!!!!! I emailed Johnstone Supply's main office, of course they don't seem to give a damn if they have any business or not so why should I. I won't feed that bear and I won't shed a tear when they're out of business either. - - A few minutes of internet searching and six phone calls (first five were bears I didn't intend to feed) led me to an HVAC supply in Tennessee that went out of their way to provide me not only with the materials I needed but did so with excellent customer service.
We look at any of these alleged "problems" and we see three common threads running through each one of them:
1- Government sticking their nose in.
2- Ignorant/lazy consumers feeding the bears.
3- Ignorant/lazy business leadership.
1- Anytime government sticks their fingers into anything, it's going to be screwed-up and the taxpayers will be forced to pay for the problems created by government.
2- Consumers need to pay attention to their own affairs. I, nor anyone else can tell someone else how to best invest their money. If people choose to throw their money away and do nothing about it, then they deserve to get screwed.
3- Businesses who make no effort to provide a better service or expose the problems created by government need not be in business.
To expand a bit on #3, let's take a look at some businesses. First, the automotive mfg's. The government imposed the corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards - out of the billions of dollars US auto makers spend on advertisements every year, have you ever once in your life seen a single commercial produced by an auto maker explaining to the consumers just how much the CAFE standards are costing them not only to purchase & repair a vehicle but also in reduced, not increased efficiency?
Banks & lenders - out of the billions of dollars banks/lenders spend on advertising every year, have you ever once seen a commercial produced by one of these businesses explaining how CONGRESS set the stage for the housing collapse?
Oil companies - out of the billions of dollars oil companies spend on advertising every year, have you ever once seen a commercial produced by one of these businesses explaining how government has prevented the development of domestic energy supplies?
Back in 1995 I started sending bills to my customers in PA with a detailed list of all the embedded taxes including the percentages and actual amount of which were reflected in that particular bill. It actually generated interest but only for a brief period of time because ignorance and apathy remained prevalent. Consumers, no matter if they are at the individual or corporate level, seem to think that if they ignore the problem, it will simply go away. The problem doesn't go away, when it is ignored, it grows larger and larger until we find ourselves in the condition were are in now. Every single problem in this country from banking to homes to automobiles has been generated because apathy and ignorance continues to feed the bears.
