"Drei" is German for "three" and "Vier" means "four" so thus the three-barrel guns are called "Drillings" and the four-barreled are "vierlings" - thus, your analogy of the "Crescent wrench" meaning any adjust able wrench is correct although it is the name of the style of the gun as opposed to the name of the original maker.
